Defense attorneys are looking for new witnesses they say will clear their clients in a five year old murder case. 14-year-old Courtney Lynn Bowser was buried in an unmarked grave in Palm Desert for five years until her body was exhumed recently. Detectives arrested cousins Floyd Lavender and Michael Gaines this March. Defense attorney Mark Sullivan says police have arrested the wrong men. Courtney Bowser ran away from her Palm Desert home in August 2003. Her naked body was found days later, She was drowned in an irrigation ditch near the city of Holtville, 100 miles southeast of Palm Desert. But Floyd Lavender was on duty at the La Quinta Home Depot when the crime was allegedly committed, according to his attorney. They’re also looking for more witnesses they say gave information to detectives that could clear the defendants. Their attorney says police are trying to locate the witnesses but have so far not been much help. The two men face a jury next month.
